4 Ways to Get Your Boss to Trust You Completely
Today I am going total on a very different though fascinating topic - “Managing up”.
When we
hear the word Managing up, we typically associate it with managing a tough
manager - overbearing, one who micromanages and looks for ways to make you work
extended hours.
In reality,
Managing up is not about managing a bad supervisor but ways to manage any
supervisor you work with for a more rewarding working relationship.
Today I share 4 keys to effectively “manage up” ….
First: Speak Up. There is no place for a “yes” person. Speak to your manager. Respectfully put your point across, whether it is about your needs or bringing clarity and alignment concerning your goals, or an opportunity to collaborate on decision making.
Second one: use Common sense. Understand your supervisor’s preferences. How does your supervisor like to work? Be quick at getting a grasp on that and ADAPT. How does your supervisor like to communicate for one – likes a formal connection via email, text messages, or over a phone call? Understanding small nuances such as these will help you anticipate your supervisor’s action and manage the consequences far better.
The Third Key: The ability to take, work off, your supervisor’s table. It is about taking the initiative and using the first key of speaking up. Discuss what all you are willing to shoulder that could lighten the work on his/ her table.
The fourth
key: Be Candid.
Have open and positive communication with your supervisor. Keep the communication lines with your manager always open. It will help not only showcase your efforts and achievements but build accountability and trust, which in turn, helps build value for your supervisor and the organization.
Finally,
demonstrate leadership in everything you do.
